Frisco Hacks is designed to be accessible to developers of all skill levels. There are no required tools or engines, and participants are free to use anything they are comfortable with. This page contains optional resources to help you get started, learn new tools, and find inspiration during the hackathon.

Tools and Technologies

You may use any game engine, framework, or programming language. Below are some commonly used options:

  • Unity – Popular engine for 2D and 3D games

  • Godot – Open-source engine, beginner-friendly

  • Unreal Engine – Powerful engine for 3D and advanced visuals

  • GameMaker – Great for fast 2D prototyping

  • Web Games – HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Three.js, Phaser, etc.

Version control and hosting:

  • GitHub – Source control and collaboration

  • Itch.io – Recommended platform for sharing playable builds

Inspiration

If you need ideas or references:

  • Focus on building one strong, unique mechanic

  • Try remixing or twisting an existing game mechanic

  • Keep scope small and polish the core experience

  • Prototype early and iterate quickly

You are not expected to build a full commercial game. Simple, creative ideas are encouraged.
