Inspiration
Our inspiration for this project came from our initial idea of trying to represent African-American game developers -- a lesser-known community that doesn’t get much recognition despite their important work.
What it does
Our project aims to introduce a few African board games, featuring both well-known and lesser-known titles. We delve into the rich history behind each game, offering insights into their cultural significance, and providing comprehensive guides on how to play them.
How we built it
The games we made used the Unity game engine and the C# programming language. Assets were found using online images edited using Adobe Photoshop. Finally, all the games were embedded into a website along with a brief history and directions to play the games.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge that we ran into involved the making and detection of different colored stones and seeds allowing for the games to be played the way that the games were intended. We all also never had a Unity experience, which was selected for visual framework and fast iterations.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Accomplishments that we are proud of include the making of the boards of each game, which was designed in mind to have the potential to teach new users with intuitive game elements, the foundation to continuously improve the project, and a simple game design meant to emulate a friendly hospitable community
What we learned
Aside from the technical skills such as basic Unity game engine and C# skills -- for most of us, it was our first time using these -- we learned just how under-represented African-American game developers are.
What's next for RootsnRules
In the future, we hope to expand upon our catalog of board games, fine-tune our current games, and spread more awareness about African and African American game developers.
