Michigan and Chicagoland friends, mark March 2-8, 2026 for some beautiful works all by composers with ties to the US, whether they came to study, to live, or were born and continue to work here. Masterworks by Rebecca Clarke, Astor Piazzolla, Nicanor Abelardo, and premieres of equally beautiful pieces by Courtney Bryan, James Lee III, and myself to ensue!

It was my absolute pleasure to record Nicanor Abelardo’s “Panoramas” on this album with lead musician and flutist Norman Menzales. This is its world-first digital recording, released on Ravello Records, an imprint of Parma Recordings.

It was lovely to return to Interlochen Public Radio after seven years to talk with host Kate Botello and play two songs by Nicanor Abelardo (”Mutya ng Pasig”) and Florence Price (”Song to the Dark Virgin”) live with pianist Susan Snyder. Please enjoy!

'They’re not like the others': Breaking down the dangers of the model minority myth

The seemingly 'positive' stereotypes commonly associated with the model minority myth that are regarded as harmless have silenced the struggles of Asian Americans.

It was an honor and a privilege to be able to speak with Katie Kim, producer at WBIR and an incredible ally in working for our people, our Asian and Pacific Islander American community. The model minority myth has been used to control us and to put us against other racial minorities in this country and across the globe, but we must take it down.

There is so much to fight against — so much personal hate and discrimination, so much systemic racism and historical violence, but we will never be alone as long we stand with each other. And I was so heartened to be able to speak on issues affecting the ADHD and autistic communities. We will not be invisible any longer, and we will see justice in the medical and social fields within our lifetimes.

Music: William Grant Still’s “Grief” performed by myself and pianist Antonio Truyols, and the Sarabande from J. S. Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1.
