About the Challenge

Join us for Hack the System, a civic and economic tech hackathon empowering participants to build tools that democratize public finance. From participatory budgeting platforms to economic education games, this event invites coders, designers, and changemakers to reimagine how communities understand and allocate resources. Whether you're creating roleplay simulations, visualization tools, or policy-driven apps, this is your chance to combine economics, civics, and technology to build a more equitable future. Regardless of the amount of experience you may have, don't be shy to join our hackathon!

Requirements

What to Build

Pick one of two tracks and build something that helps people better navigate the systems that shape their lives.

🧠 Track 1: Hack the Economy

Create something that helps people understand money, build financial literacy, or access economic opportunity.
Ideas might include:

  • A budgeting or investing game

  • A tool that explains taxes, loans, or inflation

  • A resource for job seekers or student financial aid

  • Anything that makes economics more accessible

🏛️ Track 2: Hack the Vote

Build something that helps people engage with government, participate in democracy, or make their voices heard.
You could try:

  • A participatory budgeting simulator or game

  • A tool that breaks down complex policies

  • A platform that connects people with local reps

  • Anything that brings civic systems to life

You can make a website, app, game, prototype, whatever best brings your idea to life.

📤What to Submit

To complete your submission, please provide:

  • A short description of your project and why you built it

  • A link to your code or prototype (GitHub, Replit, or similar)

  • Online Project Link: If your project is live, share a link hosted on platforms like Vercel, Heroku, GitHub Pages, or any other hosting service so judges can explore it firsthand

  • Submission Video (Optional):
You can include a demo video (up to 3 minutes) that walks us through your project — showcasing features, user interface, and how it promotes social good. Mention what technologies you used and the problem you’re solving.
Upload the video to YouTube, Vimeo, or similar, and share the link in your submission

  • (Optional) Visuals, mockups, or slides to help explain your concept

We’re looking for creativity, clarity, and impact, not perfection. Show us your passion and your vision for change!
