In my opinion, "When will the crowd spread?" sounds the most "idiomatic" of them Last edited: Nov 17, 2016

H Hildy1 Senior Member English - US and Canada Nov 17, 2016 #3 You could also say it in other ways, such as "When will it be less crowded?"

P pob14 Senior Member Central Illinois American English Nov 17, 2016 #5 "When will the lines be shorter" is what I would most likely say. Hildy has a good suggestion too. I can't think of any circumstance in which I would say "when will the crowd spread."

(in our WR dictionary for "thin" as a verb) "When will the crowd become lighter?" understandable, but not at all idiomatic. Hildy1's suggestion in post 3 is also very good.
