Increase (decrease) of / in

Hi to everybody!
I have read a few post about "Increase in/of" and actually I can't understand when should I use increase in or increase of.
For example:
"An increase of sound velocity and a decrease of the wave amplitude were found when the magnetic field is applied",I've been told I should change Increase of by increase in, you know why?
Is there any rule which explains its use?
Thanks in advance!

  • An increase in sound velocity sounds better to me. I also think that the only reason they have not said "increase in wave amplitude" is to avoid repetition.
We use increase of when followed by a number e.g. an increase of 10% / an increase of 200 tons/ an increase of €10, or if referring to something very general e.g. an increase of birds, an increase of food.
But we use an increase in for a specific quantity but without an actual number e.g. an increase in the number of birds, an increase in the temperature of the food.
To me the of is more general so needs a quantity in front of it if you want to limit it.
The in is more specific so doesn´t need a quantity.
    Hope that make sense.

Thank you very much for the explanation! It is very clear nad it helped me a lot!
    Cheers
