Inspiration

📱The nostalgia for the past and the curiosity about the thoughts and discussions of people in different eras drove us to create YesterYak. We're inspired by social medias like YikYak, a Twitter-meets-Reddit-meets-NextDoor, where people can post their thoughts within their area. We envision a platform where users could dive into the conversations of past decades - imagine being able to explore what everyday people from different backgrounds were talking about in the '20s in Oklahoma City 🌪️ or the '80s in New York 📈

What it does

🧬This retro-futuristic app is centered around "Yaks" - posts where users can express their thoughts, experiences, and tidbits about the events that characterize day-to-day life in various time periods throughout history. Yaks allow for a medium for street journalists to document the world around them and share it with the world, whether that's in the past, present, or future. ✈️

Users have the ability to view posts at different time periods, and see what it was like to live in the shoes of ordinary citizens. Imagine opening Twitter during the Great Depression or during World War II in Hiroshima, Japan. 🇯🇵

How we built it

  • Svelte
  • Tailwind CSS
  • OpenAI API

Challenges we ran into

  • Implementing different themes for different decades

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Retro-futuristic vaporwave aesthetic
  • OpenAI integration to simulate the thoughts and experiences of real people in various time periods

What we learned

  • Version control, how to work in manageable chunks and sprints, how to utilize frameworks where members have experience

What's next for YesterYak

  • Built-in radio to match the time period of the posts
