WERD! The Ultimate Word Challenge
A Competitive Word Game in Horizon Worlds for Mobile and VR
What Inspired the Creation of WERD!
As someone who enjoys word games like Wordle, Zen Word, crosswords and logic puzzles, I’ve always loved the thrill of solving something clever with limited clues. But when I explored Horizon Worlds, I noticed that this genre—something I and many others love—was missing. That gap sparked the idea to create WERD!, a game that brings the challenge and joy of wordplay into the metaverse in a fresh immersive way.
What WERD! Does
WERD! is a high-energy word challenge that tasks players with guessing a secret five-letter word in just six tries. Every guess gives feedback on letter accuracy and placement pushing players to think critically and creatively. But it doesn’t stop there—WERD! PvP adds a competitive twist by allowing players to go head-to-head racing to solve the puzzle before their opponent.
To keep gameplay exciting and rewarding, players earn points they can use for:
- Hints to reveal key letters
- Extra time in special challenges
- Status upgrades that reflect their rank on global leaderboards
It’s not just a word game—it’s a full-on arena of wit, speed and strategy.
How I Built the Experience
The world of WERD! is designed as a lively arena-style stadium to create the feeling of being part of something epic. There are five distinct terminals for different game modes: Original, Gold, Swap, Nerd and Faceoff (PvP), each with a bright neon identity to make the space feel dynamic and alive.
Players can participate in games, spectate live PvP matches or relax in the social hub—an open area for conversation, cheering others on and celebrating wins. The world is deliberately open and roofless to maintain visual flow and make the skybox part of the aesthetic.
The goal was to strike the perfect balance between competitive gameplay and casual social interaction.
Challenges I Faced
One of the biggest hurdles was learning and working with Typescript for game scripting. It was a steep learning curve and I leaned heavily on community support to bring my vision to life.
Another challenge was perfecting the game flow—making sure gameplay was fast, fun and fair while integrating strategy and progression. Balancing fun and competition took testing, feedback and constant iteration.
Accomplishments I’m Proud Of
I’m especially proud of how I implemented the leaderboards. That was something I had no experience with before and now they’re an integral part of the world’s competitive spirit.
I’m also proud of the game design itself—how the visuals, user experience and community aspects all came together into something cohesive and enjoyable.
What I Learned
This project stretched me in new technical directions. I learned how to:
- Script using Typescript
- Build functioning leaderboards
- Import and use custom 3D images using Blender
- Design user experiences with competition and community in mind
More than anything, I learned how powerful world-building can be when it’s tied to something you genuinely enjoy.
What’s Next for WERD!
At launch, players can experience:
- WERD! Original
- WERD! Faceoff (PvP)
In the coming months, I’ll roll out a new version of the game each month—starting with WERD! Swap, a twist on the original formula with new challenges. These ongoing releases will keep the gameplay fresh, increase replay value and give players new ways to compete and connect.
Monthly PvP tournaments are also on the way, featuring prize money, leaderboards and brackets that bring players back again and again.
