Inspiration

The development of the VR-cafe project was inspired by my love for coffee and frequent travels, combined with the difficulty of meeting up with friends.

What it does

The project will allow people to meet up with their friends over a cup of coffee, even if they are separated by a great distance, by immersing them in a unique virtual environment (their favorite coffee shops or ones they have never been to before) and optionally playing simple tabletop games.

How we built it

If the project is successful, the plan is to install the application on Pico headsets without the need for a stationary PC. New locations will gradually be added based on voting or requests from cafes interested in collaboration.

Challenges we ran into

Throughout the development of the project, I encountered various technical and design challenges. One of them was optimizing graphics and performance to ensure a smooth and realistic virtual environment. It also turned out to be difficult to choose a cafe for the first place, but I decided to choose a cafe in Paris, because I studied and worked there for several years. However, these difficulties can be overcome with just a little more time.

What we learned

During the process, I managed to configure the PICO SDKs: PICO Sense Pack and PICO Interaction Pack on a Unity3D test project.

What's next for VR-cafe

The next step is to bring the project to a working version. Create the environment of the selected cafe and add network interaction. If possible, implement QR code recognition on the coffee cup to improve the accuracy of linking one's own home cup in virtual reality.
