Inspiration
The inspiration for TinyThreads stems from the alarming reality that over 3.1 billion articles of children's clothing are discarded annually, largely due to the rapid growth of children. This leads to a wasteful cycle where wearable clothing is discarded prematurely, creating challenges for parents who struggle with financial constraints, seasonal changes, and unexpected circumstances. TinyThreads aims to address this issue by creating a platform that facilitates the easy and accessible swapping of suitable children's clothing, promoting reuse and sustainability.
What it does
Our concept is simple and versatile. Our platform facilitates easy swapping of children's clothing, promoting reuse and addressing sustainability goals. Users can trade outgrown clothes online, reducing the need for constant new purchases and lowering the carbon footprint. This cost-effective solution helps financially strained parents dress their children in quality clothing at every growth stage. It appeals to both those who want to give back and those who seek a more sustainable alternative.
How we built it
Figma for iterative design. Multiple versions were used. DynamoDB and AWS were used to store two seperate databases for both the users on the site, as well as storage of donated/grabbed items. Flask was used to integrate the backend.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Since some of our team members did not previously know how to code on application-scale code, it was good to learn how to integrate the server we had set up with a React-based application that we were building. Additionally, several of our team members had never participated in a hackathon before, so we pride ourselves on a smoothful process of ideation, design, building, testing, and iteratively building and adding useful features to create a sophisticated and thoughtful application to support our solution. Figma, React, and AWS/DynamoDB were all services that we were all challenged to learn and we are proud that our learning approach was both efficient and effective.
What's next for TinyThreads
Future steps involve expanding user engagement, forming community partnerships, and continually refining the platform to better serve the needs of parents and promote a circular economy for children's clothing. Additionally, we'd like to see this system implemented on a large scale with companies selling children's clothing
