Inspiration

Sometimes, we live through moments — joyful or painful — and think, “I want to remember this forever.” But life moves fast, and memories fade. We wanted to create a space where you can pause time. Not for the world — but for you. Your thoughts, your feelings, your growth — safely tucked away to revisit later. In a world racing ahead with AI, TimeCapsuleYou is a gentle reminder of what only humans can do: feel deeply, reflect, and remember. Because no algorithm can replace the power of your story.

What it does

TimeCapsuleYou lets you create personal digital time capsules — little memory boxes filled with your thoughts, letters to your future self, dreams, or moments. You choose what to store and when it should open again — a week later, a year, or even a decade. Once you log in, you’re taken to a dashboard with dotted plus sign boxes. Click one, and a pop-up lets you write and seal a moment away. Later, when the time comes — your past self sends you a message. It’s your own memory, waiting patiently to be remembered.

How we built it

We started by selecting some beautiful custom fonts shared in the resources thread of the CS Girlies server — because every detail matters when you're designing a space for memories. The frontend of TimeCapsuleYou was built using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, shaping a clean, user-friendly interface that feels personal and timeless. The backend runs on Python, and we used SQLite as a lightweight yet reliable database to store each time capsule securely. Together, these technologies let users create, store, and later rediscover their most cherished moments — exactly how they left them

Challenges we ran into

While building TimeCapsuleYou, we ran into quite a few hiccups along the way.

We wanted to make the experience deeply personal, even experimenting with custom handwriting fonts and support for multiple languages. But most of the beautiful handwritten fonts were paid, and language support introduced unexpected layout issues — so we had to pause on that dream (for now!).

We struggled in video making and AI voiceovers.

We also struggled with aligning the emotional tone of the design — finding that delicate balance between nostalgic and modern was harder than we thought.

Debugging database connectivity between Python and SQLite when testing locally vs deployment environments was another unexpected twist.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We turned a fleeting idea into something real and beautiful — a working platform where anyone can pause time and preserve their emotions.

Despite working across different countries and time zones, we collaborated seamlessly, shared late-night laughs, and lifted each other up at every step.

We added stylistic touches like fonts from community resources, thoughtful UX decisions, and emotional copywriting — all with a beginner-friendly mindset.

Most of all, we built something that feels like us — a space to remember, reflect, and reconnect. And that’s what makes it so special.

What we learned

We learned how to build a full-stack web application from scratch — blending HTML, CSS, and JavaScript with Python and SQLite to make our idea come alive.

We learned how to implement a backend system using Python and SQLite, enabling user registration, login authentication, and data persistence for each user’s time capsules.

We explored custom UI/UX improvements, such as integrating external Google Fonts shared in the CS Girlies resources thread to enhance visual appeal.

What's next for TimecapsuleYou
