The Yard
Inspiration
As HBCU students and alumni, we realized that while there’s a strong sense of pride within individual campuses, there isn’t a unified digital network connecting all HBCUs together.
Amid ongoing DEI challenges and attacks on diversity initiatives, we wanted to create a platform that strengthens the bonds between HBCU students, alumni, and schools — building a digital bridge across all Yards.
We envisioned The Yard as a safe space where opportunities, mentorship, and authentic community can thrive across generations of HBCU excellence.
What it does
The Yard is a mobile app that empowers HBCU students and alumni to:
- 🔍 Discover and connect with students and alumni from any HBCU
- 📬 Start conversations, chat, and build real relationships
- 🧑🏫 Match with mentors for professional and personal guidance
- 📆 Find and organize HBCU community events and linkups
- ✍️ Create rich profiles highlighting their HBCU, major, grad year, and career interests
- 📸 Share their spirit with custom profile images and bios
At its heart, The Yard Bridge is a space to stay connected, feel supported, and strengthen HBCU pride across every campus.
How we built it
- SwiftUI (iOS) — Built the front-end entirely in SwiftUI for smooth, modern user experience
- Firebase Authentication — Handles secure user login and signup
- Firebase Firestore — Stores user profiles, messages, chats, and events
- Firebase Storage — Manages user profile pictures with secure cloud storage
- Kingfisher — Efficient image caching for fast, smooth profile photo loading
- Swift Package Manager — Clean dependency management
- Realtime Database Updates — Chats, profiles, and events update instantly without refreshing
Every piece was built with scalability, security, and accessibility in mind.
Challenges we ran into
- ⚡ Implementing smooth real-time chat updates without overwhelming reads/writes on Firestore
- ⚡ Designing a consistent and beautiful UI that feels familiar (like Instagram DMs) but uniquely HBCU-centric
- ⚡ Handling efficient profile image loading and caching without slowing down user experience
- ⚡ Setting up dynamic Firestore security rules to protect user data
- ⚡ Debugging issues around starting duplicate chats with the same users (now fully fixed!)
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- 🎯 Built a fully functional HBCU connection platform in under 48 hours
- 🎯 Made profile creation simple but powerful, focusing on HBCU pride and professional growth
- 🎯 Achieved fast and smooth image loading using Kingfisher integration
- 🎯 Created a scalable real-time chat system with typing indicators, last seen tracking, and no duplicate threads
- 🎯 Designed everything mobile-first, polished, and production-ready
What we learned
- 🧠 How to design Firestore database structures for real-world scale (especially with messages and chats)
- 🧠 How important caching and async loading is for creating a real “social” feel in apps
- 🧠 How to integrate Firebase Authentication, Firestore, and Storage securely and smoothly
- 🧠 How subtle design touches (like “typing…” indicators and quick profile previews) dramatically improve user trust and retention
- 🧠 That HBCU communities are ready for digital platforms that center their culture, pride, and legacy
What's next for The Yard
- 🌎 Launch on TestFlight for a broader round of beta testing across HBCUs
- 📱 Build an Android version using Flutter for cross-platform reach
- 🏛️ Partner directly with HBCUs to onboard students at freshman orientation events
- 🎓 Expand features to include internship boards, scholarships, and alumni job offers
- 🛡️ Implement end-to-end encryption for chats to maximize user trust
- 🎉 Host virtual and in-person Yard events inside the app
- 💬 Create discussion boards and topic-specific group chats for majors, sports, and campus orgs
- 🫂 Build the largest, safest, and strongest digital network for HBCUs in the world.
