What it does
When it comes to addressing the theme of justice, I believe the place where the most realistic change can occur is people's perceptions of world events, People should have a plain unbiased source of information when it comes to receiving their news. And although that sounds impossible to do at first, this app has an interesting idea where the user can access news from different parts of the world. When the user sees 2 conflicting agendas, it is easier to point out the bias and come to a conclusion about a certain matter. By doing so, the media's influence on people decreases and the general opinion will not lean to media companies' agenda but rather support what they actually believe to be just. The way to use this tool is by first selecting the country you live in, and then choosing another region with which you want to compare to. It'll take a few seconds since it fetches from apis and scrapes from websites but the result is great and you can clearly see a massive difference between how both sources have portrayed certain events.
Tying back to justice, one of the most overlooked aspects of day to day life is knowing what your rights are. This country provides its citizens with many rights yet so many don't realize that they are not making use of them in fairly common scenarios like a police stop on traffic, etc. Knowing your rights equates to making sure your justice is upheld. In an attempt to amend this, this app uses an API to gather some of the most common legal situations and gave the user access to the information they need in regards to what their rights are in that situation and how to act. Just by simply searching.
Tellus also has another powerful feature which attempts to act as an inclusive safe space where school students can help resolve disagreements and foster understanding between each other. It is a real time chat system intended to be supervised by teachers or even by fellow students who ensure this safe online space is maintained. Through this feature, students can navigate tough conversations with the goal of finding common ground and mutual respect for one another.
How we built it
I built it Using Django, a python framework that allows me to use multiple languages like python, javascript, html, and css. Using API's I made some of the interesting features I have on my web-application.
Challenges we ran into
Setting up the API's and extracting the information was one of the hardest parts. Creating real time chat was also very challenging as I ran into many errors. Keeping myself awake was also a challenge but I managed to pull through!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Finishing this app in only 24 hours is a crazy accomplishment in my book! Problem solving my way through all the errors, challenges and setbacks definitely helped my coding evolve which I am very grateful for. The global news comparison feature was a very creative idea that I am also very proud of.
What we learned
I learned how to use Ajax for real time chat with django and I also learned more about how to parse information and deal with API's.
What's next for Tell Us
The next step would me making this website secure and making sure it is bug free. Once that step is complete it could even be launched. Since the API's will require you to pay money if you use it commercially then that is probably not an option. But even so, I believe improving upon this app idea has great potential and future prospects.
