Inspiration

Young musicians at an intermediate to advanced level mastery of their instrument often look to develop their personal signature/interpretations of music, but it is difficult to receive constant real time feedback and guidance in regards to time and money.

What it does

SymphoMe is a musical education app that transcribes a musician's play through of existing music sheets in real time, where they are able to compare their transcribed interpretations against the original sheet. Musicians can also record their own original or improv'd pieces to review and edit, as well as share their music sheets to the SymphoMe community. Our app empowers budding musicians to learn from one another and develop their unique musical signatures.

How we built it

We ideated and brainstormed the app before translating our high fidelity mockup into Figma. Treble, the dolphin mascot of our app, was created in ibisPaint.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges we encountered was adjusting to the work schedule of a hackathon, since this event was the first college hackathon all of us had participated in. But we were able to overcome this through constant communication and check-ins with one another, as well as playing into each others' creative and technical strengths.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're very proud of Treble's design, who we created to lend the app a friendly tone that guides our musicians through the app.

What we learned

We learned of how difficult it is for many aspiring musicians to afford musical lessons, as well as balance their technical and personal development in the instrumental learning process. We also acquired an immense amount of Figma knowledge.

What's next for SymphoMe

Our next steps are to optimize the interface and enhance the user experience, especially for musicians more accustomed to analogue tools. We also hope to integrate real-time transcription technology to create the fully functional product.
