Inspiration

College can be a very isolating place, with many students unable to find a sense of community. The team decided that we should try to help our own Gators handle this problem and attempt to increase their quality of life: thus, SwampPit was born.

What it does

SwampPit is a web application where UF students can create a profiles and search other students profiles to find their future friends. It functions like a basic website, which sign up/log in and profile creation.

How we built it

The team attempted to spilt the project into parts, with some handling the front end like the web pages and their visuals, and others handling the backend, like the database that stores profiles and user logins.

Challenges we ran into

This project was an unexpected endeavor, with the team being fairly new to hackathons, there was plenty of struggles. It took a while to research how to use something, when to use it, and how to fix it when it breaks (which is all the time). Another issue we had was with Git, as we got plenty of merge errors. We ultimately had to try and scale things down a lot. While we couldn't complete our original vision , we were able to create a product we're proud of!

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The fact that we were able to complete this and have something to show for it. We were very concerned at the start if this would be feasible for us, but we got it done!

What we learned

We learned plenty of new things, including HTML, using Node.js, and JavaScript. However the most importantly thing we learned was debugging and to stay calm. There were many times where things just stopped working, and the impending submission deadline was steadily approaching. Instead of giving up, we learned how to keep pushing towards a solution that would help with us complete our goal.

What's next for SwampPit

The next thing we would want is to incorporate more functionality that we didn't have time for, like adding pictures, having on platform messaging, and including status updates.
