Inspiration
Every month, millions of people subscribe to powerful AI tools like ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, and Notion AI — but only use them a few times. Meanwhile, countless others need access just for a day or even a few hours but can’t justify paying the full subscription price.
We saw an opportunity: what if we could create a system that lets people rent access to these tools affordably while helping others monetize their unused subscription time? That’s how SubSplit was born — a smarter, fairer way to access premium tools.
What it does
SubSplit allows users to:
Rent access to premium tools (e.g. ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, Notion AI) starting at $2/day. Monetize their unused subscriptions by listing them on the platform. Seamlessly access tools without needing to own a subscription — just rent, use, and go. It’s like “Airbnb for digital tools.”
How we built it
Frontend: Built using React + Tailwind CSS for a smooth, responsive UI Backend: Node.js with Express.js connected to Firebase for user auth and session tracking Database: Firestore for real-time updates and user data Payments: Stripe API for microtransactions and wallet integration Access System: Prototype uses sandboxed browsers and API gateways to allow secure, time-limited access
Challenges we ran into
Ensuring secure temporary access to accounts without exposing credentials Complying with terms of service of various platforms Handling concurrency and session scheduling Designing a user-friendly experience for both renters and owners
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built a working MVP that lets users rent AI tools with real payments Developed a dual-mode dashboard (Renter & Owner views) Enabled listing, scheduling, wallet, and secure access all in one interface Created a working rental flow that could scale with more tools
What we learned
Deepened our understanding of secure authentication, session management, and Stripe integration Learned how to structure multi-role platforms Explored creative ways to sandbox access to digital tools Understood the importance of user trust and reputation systems
What's next for Subsplit
Launching a fully API-based rental model (e.g. Pay-Per-Prompt) Browser extension for seamless access Building trust with a user review system Adding more supported tools: Adobe Suite, Figma, Midjourney, etc. Partnering with tool providers to enable native, temporary access options
