Inspiration
We were concerned about the rampant increase in tech companies collecting, using and selling personal data in the last decade. This data collecting process begins with extremely verbose and overcomplicated terms of service documents that lead many users to just agree without ever reading them, allowing them to legally collect tons of personal data on the user because they "agreed" to it, then using that data for their own benefit.
What it does
Straight Fwrd is a extension for Google Chrome that provides users with an abbreviated summary of terms and conditions documents that they might need to agree to.
How we built it
Straight Fwrd is a web application created using HTML/CS/JS, express.js, and node.js. The summarization was powered by the GPT-3.5 API, provided by OpenAI.
Challenges we ran into
For this project, we decided to challenge ourselves by working in a field completely unfamiliar to us. We had little to no experience in web development or any of the technologies used in this project, so we had to learn everything as we continued along the project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of overcoming our inexperience in web development and other involved technologies and producing a functional web application despite the short timeframe.
What we learned
By tackling a somewhat ambitious project like this one despite our lack of experience, we were forced to learn a lot about these topics. Over the course of this project, we have gotten much more comfortable working with HTML/CSS/JS, JavaScript frameworks, and APIs.
What's next for Straight Fwrd
We would like to release Straight Fwrd for not only Google Chrome, but all major web browsers like Microsoft Edge, Firefox, or Opera. Furthermore, we would like to enhance Straight Fwrd's AI simplification process with GPT-4, a much more powerful language model than the current GPT-3.5 once that is made available to the public.
