Tender - watch our video!

Inspiration

Online dating is frustrating. This because 1) dating strangers is overrated — we are looking in the wrong place and 2) current algorithms value quantity over quality. There are no apps that match people within your network. This is where Tender comes in.

What it does

Find out who your crushes are in a college/network. We believe that your relationships should be intentional and private. Via search, our app allows you to select people in your school and, through a quadratic cost function, express how much you like them. We announce one mutual match per week with an algorithm that values mutually strong liking. We model love instead of gamifying it.

Each user will be given 20 tokens per week, and you can express how intensely you like someone through a quadratic voting algorithm. Watch our video for an explanation.

Additionally, we can invite people to the app by inserting their email address and we will send a private invite link to their .edu emails.

How we built it

We learned and built the backend with MongoDB with a client interface using React and Redux.

Challenges we ran into

We are proud to build a functional backend and frontend from the ground up. However, we are having bugs in the API that are preventing the two from connecting. Currently, the user can interact with other users but the email functionality has not been implemented yet.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

On the first day of the hackathon, we thought of the algorithm for matching two people. It is based on the minimum standard deviation between two person likings. We spent a significant portion of time to design and refine this centric algorithm.

Additionally, regarding the technical aspects, we learnt a lot about implementing a new database eco-system: MongoDB. We also successfully implemented a React and Redux login system, storing encrypted user information onto our MongoDB database.

What we learned

We learned about MongoDB, Redux, and also how to quickly transform an idea into something that is usable.

What's next for Tender

We intend to integrate this with Instagram and existing social networks, such as LinkedIn, Instagram, etc. Additionally, we think that this would be a great idea for a start-up aiming at university students and beyond!
