Inspiration
We had a few friends who were sad and lonely and weren't able to express themselves during the pandemic. But when gaming with them, they were able to open up and feel happier thus inspiring us to make this project.
What it does
Sociapolis allows you to be in a call with another person as well as being able to game with that person.
How we built it
We built it using HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript. We created different APIs to use in our website in order to enhance the user's experience. We also used WebRTC to create one on one video calls in our site.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into problems while trying to create a web video chat and went through many different real time communication applications before finally settling on using WebRTC. We also ran into problems while creating our Pictionary drawing board because we needed to figure out a way to make it live so both parties could see the same thing at the same time. One of our teammates also passed out and didn't wake up for 5 hours.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Some things that we accomplished in this hackathon that we're proud of include finishing two games with little prior experience. We were also able to make WebRTC live video calling so that our users can communicate with each other while playing our games.
What we learned
We learned how to better collaborate and give each person work based upon their ability. We also learned a lot about creating games and improved our skills in coding using HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript.
What's next for Sociapolis
We plan to add new games, both single and multiplayer, add public game rooms, and expand our video calling to be able to support more people.
