Inspiration
Starting on this project, we first brainstormed various issues/concepts we see in our society today. These ideas were very broad as we discussed issues regarding technological applications related to the elderly, sustainability, and those with physical/mental disabilities. However, we were able to narrow our idea down even further, discussing issues with traditional event planning methods.
About SimPlan/How we Built our Project
For large, and even small-scaled events, there aren’t many resources available to really hone in on specific logistics of your event. People typically use Google Docs or Spreadsheets to plan their events, but we wanted to take it a step further. As a result, we started planning a website that would help people plan and organize their events from the specifics of where people would line up, how they would enter, catering and food options, to the accessibility of sound systems.
How we tailored SimPlan to the Prompt
We also wanted to relate it specifically to this year’s Designathon prompt: Reimagining how we interface with the world. Using AR, we use models of actual rooms to visualize how to plan an event. Accounting everything from tables to fire hazards, this website allows the user to plan out events using a 3D model.
Challenges
Some challenges we faced include narrowing down the scope of our project. We had to decide whether to gear this project mainly for project planners or those who are attending the event, so that they understand the logistics and specifics of the event so that it runs smoothly. However, in the end we decided that it would be best to mainly focus on a website geared towards event planners, just to narrow our target audience and make it more personalized. Another challenge was also ideating for our project. Although we were able to brainstorm various issues, they were very broad. Even after we narrowed down to event planning, the specifics, and organizing our ideas to create a functional website was a significant challenge. However, the process of creating user flows, conducting user interviews, and seeking the guidance of different mentors, helped us hone in on our idea.
Our Vision
All in all, this app encouraged us to think outside of the box, expanding our ideas beyond traditional event planning of writing down all our logistics in a long Google Doc. This website will make it easier for event planners to carry out events of every scale.
