Inspiration

Women make up only 25% of the workforce in tech, which is even lower than the percentage in the 1980’s. We hope to address the significant issue of gender diversity in tech by providing a safe environment where women can seek mentorship to learn about programming and gain experience in programming projects. Our web app will help women build a community with each other that will hopefully inspire them to start a career in tech or at least create meaningful connections with other motivated women.

What it does

Our web app connects women who program to experienced female mentors who will teach users how to successfully complete projects and help guide them through their projects. They will also be able to look for and invite teammates to their projects and join existing projects being led by women. The goal of our website is to help female programmers learn as much as possible while completing projects with other female programmers to gain valuable industry knowledge and experience.

How we built it

We first created a mockup of all the different pages of the website and then split those up between us. We used React to build the website and connected it to a database with Firebase.

Challenges we ran into

Our biggest challenge was definitely lack of experience. Out of the 4 members on our team, it was the first Hackathon for 3 of us and only the second Hackathon for the fourth person. Also, 2 out of 4 of us had never used React before (which is what we used), so some teammates had to teach that very quickly and they therefore couldn’t start working on their own assigned pages until later. Another challenge was that we are all over the globe: one of us is in France, another in India, and two of us are in California. The time difference was a bit difficult to work with because we were working at different times, which made communication hard.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are very proud of everything we learned and were able to implement in the short time span of the project!

What we learned

Aside from our newly learned skills in React and Firebase, we learned how to manage and complete a project in just 24 hours with a completely global group. We also learned that we should have focused on main functionality rather than on details.

What's next for She Programs

Once we polish the functionality and UI of the website, we would begin to find female programming mentors and start marketing toward female programmers to start posting their projects to find teammates and projects to be a part of.
