Inspiration
Every day, valuable items are discarded or left unused, contributing to pollution and the depletion of resources. We believe that these items can have a second life. Our goal was to build an app that not only empowers people to resell effortlessly but also addresses the frustrations of traditional selling methods. With Quickbay, we simplify the reselling process, using AI (Computer Vision) to minimize the time spent on cumbersome tasks.
This isn't just a project for us—it’s a way to make a meaningful difference in how we all consume and recycle, one item at a time.
What it does
Quickbay lets users record a video of the items they want to sell. Using AI, the app identifies objects in the video, finds the best prices for similar items on eBay, and automates the listing process. Users can easily edit or confirm the identified items and create postings instantly. This streamlined interface eliminates time-consuming steps, making reselling effortless while contributing to a more sustainable future.
How we built it
Quickbay is designed to serve sustainable users effortlessly. When they open the app, they can activate the camera and start filming their belongings all at once. During the filming, our server leverages computer vision to detect objects in real time and connects them to the eBay API. What does this mean for users? After filming, a comprehensive list of detected products is automatically generated and ready to be listed with just one button click. It doesn't get easier than that!
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was optimizing object detection in real-time video feeds. We experimented with multiple models, including YOLOv8, YOLOv5 in all sizes, and Detectron 2, ultimately finalizing our approach with YOLOv5-L. Additionally, integrating the numerous eBay API features—many of which typically require extensive team efforts—was a significant hurdle that we successfully overcame.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of building a seamless, end-to-end reselling app that combines AI with real-world usability. The real-time object recognition works well, and the integration with eBay pricing has been smooth. We’re also thrilled that Quickbay promotes sustainability by making reselling easy, contributing to the reduction of waste.
What we learned
We gained a deeper understanding of AI and its real-world applications, particularly in object detection and image recognition. We also learned how to optimize API integration for mobile platforms and tackle the user experience challenges of handling multiple object categories.
What's next for Quickbay
We plan to enhance Quickbay by expanding its marketplace reach beyond eBay, incorporating features like bulk item listing and sustainability impact tracking. We also want to improve the AI model for even better accuracy and expand our app's reach globally, allowing more users to contribute to a sustainable future through effortless reselling.
