Inspiration

Imagine walking into a club meeting, networking event, or conference reception. You sign in, grab a snack, glance around, and then… just stand there. The conversations are all the same: “What’s your name?” “What’s your major?” Or worse, you’re pretending to do something important on the settings app just to avoid the awkward silence. We’ve all been there!

ProxiConnect reimagines the check-in process as the starting point for connection. Instead of just signing in and drifting around, attendees choose a playful avatar and immediately join a mini-game selected by the host.

At the moment, we’ve focused on perfecting “Would You Rather,” where everyone votes on lighthearted questions in real time. By asking provocative questions we found it can spark further conversations and debate between attendee!

For example we found the question would you rather "Give up Roblox" or "Give up Minecraft" to be particularly provocative to conversation between attendees.

Behind the scenes, AI can help hosts generate engaging, audience-tailored "would you rather questions" so they don’t have to worry about last-minute icebreaker planning. The technology does the setup, but the real connections happen between people.

How we built it

We built ProxiConnect using React, Next.js, and Supabase. Hosting on Vercel makes it accessible to anyone with a phone and internet connection. This setup is scalable and if given more time this could become a full fledged app used by many events.

For the AI-powered question generation, we integrated GPT Completions API to help hosts create engaging "Would You Rather" prompts tailored to their specific events and audiences. Supabase handles our data needs, ensuring that votes and interactions sync seamlessly across all connected devices during live events.

Challenges we ran into

Working together through GitHub was trickier than expected and merge conflicts had a way of testing our patience. Integrating APIs for real-time voting and keeping multiple devices in sync was another big challenge. But these challenges helped us work together as a team to solve them.
