Inspiration

At the beginning of lockdown in March of 2020, similar establishments were founded to help keep small businesses open and also provide necessary supplies to frontline healthcare workers. Our group came up with a similar idea to solve a completely different problem.

What it does

Our goal for this organization is to effectively reduce food waste while also allocating the previously wasted food resources to places in need. For example, homeless shelters, places of worship, hospitals, etc.

How we built it

We started off by brainstorming and forming a presentation to express our ideas, values, and goals with the organization. We then decided to make a website to lay a base foundation for our website. And lastly we created a virtual chatbot assistant to help guide users through our website and services.

Challenges we ran into

For us the biggest challenge was managing our time properly and coordinating everything together when starting the project. However, we noticed that we progressively improved on this especially through Saturday the 5th of February.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our biggest accomplishment was that everybody worked well with everyone. We faced little to none conflicts within team members. We were open to each others ideas and embraced mistakes, instead of yelling at someone for making a mistake (which we all did at some point) we suggested and guided.

What we learned

All of us learned new communication skills, new skill sets with technology, and perhaps most importantly everyone gained more exposure to a hackathon environment. This project was a valuable experience we will all be able to use for future projects, hackathons, etc.

What's next for Planet Refuel

We plan on bringing more members on the team for back-end work. Once we are ready to fully launch we aim to expand our locations and seek partnerships from bigger companies to try and help communities across the globe. We also plan on hosting different events for fundraisers instead of just relying on gofundme for our funds.
