The three of us, Antonio Lee, Kamesh Darisipudi, and myself Hemanth Koralla decided to compete in our first hackathon by attending HackFSU. As first years with very limited knowledge in computer science, we came in with an open mind and a willingness to learn. The inspiration for our idea came when boarding the bus for the event. We noticed that our facilitator struggled to pronounce many of the foreign names when calling attendance.

This led us to ask the question, "How can we make this easier?" Asking this question guided us towards the development of Phonix - a mobile and web interface that converts foreign names into easily pronounceable words, phrases, and sounds. For example, the name Kamesh is spelled like it is pronounced "come + mesh". In reality however, it is pronounced "calm + ay + esh". This is where Phonix comes in. Our application allows users to view the correct and appropriate pronunciation based on syllable breakdown of the name.

We envision this app as having a wide potential for future applications. We are confident that the algorithms can be used for a range of cultures and languages. Through our first hackathon, we gained insight into many new fields including nodes, servers, Javascript, HTML, and Android Studio, and we are eager to learn much, much more.
