Inspiration Our inspiration for OpenGov came from seeing how difficult it can be to find information and resources using traditional 311 websites. Our teammate's personal experience struggling to navigate 311 to get assistance demonstrated a need for an easier way to get quick answers.
What it does OpenGov is a website with a chatbot that makes 311 information more accessible. Users can ask questions in natural language and get direct answers quickly without having to dig through the traditional 311 site.
How we built it We built OpenGov using Bubble to create the website and Scale.AI Donavan for the chatbot that ingests 311 data. The chatbot uses natural language processing to understand questions and provide answers by searching through the 311 knowledge base we created.
Challenges we ran into It was difficult to ingest and organize all of the 311 data in a way that enabled quick search and retrieval of answers. Fine tuning the natural language processing took time to ensure it could understand a wide variety of question formats.
Accomplishments that we're proud of We're proud to have built an easy-to-use 311 question and answer service that can understand natural language questions. The telegram integration that allows users to add the bot and get answers via voice commands on their phone is also a major accomplishment.
What we learned This project taught us how challenging it can be to organize and connect large sets of data to power a natural language search service. We gained valuable experience in conversational UI and telegram bot development.
What's next for OpenGov Next steps are to expand the 311 knowledge base to cover more topics and regions. We also want to make the telegram bot available to more users by promoting it and potentially releasing it on the app store. Creating the Call Center this runs out of.
