Inspiration

We took inspiration from the increasing hate speech wave in social media which led us to make a smart AI which detects hate speech on social media platforms like Discord and erases them We noticed that hotlines such as suicide hotlines which provide services for people are usually very backed up and it is very hard to get ahold of someone so we made our own service in return to assist people in that situation

What it does

Filters out hate speech by using a model by cohere trained by the team Connects users with other uses to talk anonymously

How we built it

We used Discord.js, Node.js, and TypeScript for the backend along with a cohere AI model that we trained to detect for hate speech

Challenges we ran into

We ran into challenges with typescript, since most of the team was new we were very unfamiliar with the ideas of typings as we originated from javascript, we eventually caught on and now we love using typescript and this is one of the languages we will be using for future hackathons!

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Although we have done similar things in the past we are proud of the fact that we learned more about the situation of the LGBTQ communities, we have always known that they existed but we were not knowledgable about the community to the extent we are now

What we learned

We learned how to implement cohere, typescript was a new experience for a few of us, and we dived a layer deeper into the world of the Discord API

What's next for NoH8

We believe that NoH8 has the potential to provide services that can make an impact on not only the LGBTQ communities but on people in general, although the product is near production level ready we would like to refine some aspects of it, make the code neater and start advertising this bot to get users to use it and hopefully create a safe space for everyone!
