Inspiration
A team member’s family member struggled to get medical help on campus after a leg injury, highlighting the need for faster and more accessible medical support. We aimed to reduce patient wait times, particularly in areas with limited medical services, by bridging the gap between urban-quality healthcare and underserved locations.
What it does
MedLink Pro connects nurses with doctors across different hospitals to facilitate urgent consultations, especially in hospitals that face staffing shortages or are located in rural areas. This way, patients can receive prompt advice and necessary care without excessive delays.
How we built it
The project combines a React frontend with a Node.js Express backend. We integrated Slack for communication, Google Maps API for hospital location mapping, Material UI for styling, ChatGPT API for intelligent assistance, and Chatscope UI to streamline our chat interface.
Challenges we ran into
Implementing the Google Maps API posed challenges, along with the team’s first experience in React and HTML/CSS styling. Integrating Slack and ChatGPT for real-time communication also required overcoming some technical difficulties.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully embedded Slack chats, enabling direct communication, utilized the ChatGPT API for medical advice, and used Google Maps API to help users visualize hospital locations, improving the app's functionality and user experience.
What we learned
We gained skills in source control, learned about frontend frameworks, achieved backend-to-frontend integration, and practiced implementing various APIs into a functional application.
What's next for MedLink Pro
Future plans include sourcing real medical data, incorporating a database like MongoDB for patient and hospital information, and fully integrating Slack to enhance user interaction within the app.
