Inspiration
Planning a big event like McHacks is no easy feat- and it can often leave behind important considerations like ecological impact. Although we love attending hackathons and other major events, we couldn't help but wonder how much waste is being produced during these? Figuring out how much CO2, Water Resources, Energy Resources and Global Warming Index, an event is producing- and how to cut down on this waste requires lots of research and tools.
What it does
McFootprint makes it easy to calculate, consider and cut down on waste produced by major events. For example, making simple choices like providing non-plastic lanyards, natural fibers and sustainable food, can have huge effects on cutting down waste. McFootprint aims to make it easy to estimate scores based on participants, food choices, transport ect- all of which is readily accessible data to event planners looking to make their event more sustainable.
How we built it
McFootprint is built like most web-apps- using a back-end data base and calculation APIs in python and flask, and vue.js for it's front end.
Challenges we ran into
This was the first hackathon for all of us on our team and understanding how to design, create and actually code a app was quite a challenge!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Having a functioning web app! We almost gave up around hour 2....
What we learned
How to use flask, vue.js and databases! Also- how hard it is to correctly estimate the emissions from products, transport and technology.
What's next for McFootprint
We hope to expand with larger support for all sorts of events and more accurate data. We would love to pair up with a research team that can focus on collecting data and creating a reliable "eco-score" for events.
