Inspiration

We were inspired by a special game called The First Tree. This game had a special story that resonated with all of us, and so we wanted to try and recreate the visual style. We also wanted to spread awareness of the difficulties wolves in this day and age are facing because of man made issues.

What it does

Lone Wolf is an Open World Game where the lost wolf (The Player), must attempt to successfully complete a number of quests in order to find his lost family. Players will take an adventure through the world finding deer, meeting the fox king, dealing with the fox merchant, and surviving in solidarity.

How we built it

Using Unreal Engine with the Blueprint system, we created this game after a lot of hard work. We used low-poly models to create a special environment, making our game a special piece of art that anyone can play.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into many problems with our project. Unlike how it may sound, Blueprint is not the easiest to work with. It uses C++, and as such, it has many problems to work through.

So, here are a few issues we ran into. First of all, getting Blender to create the animations for our wolf model waking up, was a tough issue to solve. Many settings and tweaks later, we solved it, and were able to create the animation. However, and this leads onto our next problem, we were not able to use it.

Second of all, getting Unreal to properly utilize animations during cutscenes is not an easy task. After exporting our animations from Blender, we attempted to use the animations in Unreal, but it never worked. This was the reason we were not able to use the animation in our project.'

Our computers also had a hard time processing the game Due to Unreal's high system requirements, we were unable to run, edit, or even view our project on some of our laptops.

And for our final main issue, getting our map to work. Syncing our main map to our other devices was not an easy task. It seemed to be corrupted, and so it would not sync. We instead worked on other devices first, and pushed all the changes to the main device with said map.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We got our game to meet our own expectations, and even exceed them. We also overcame many problems with our game engine, and with programming in general. This is an accomplishment that we're glad about. In the end, our project means to inspire others, and we are proud that we will be able to achieve this goal.

What we learned

We learned many aspects of the Unreal game engine, including how to code in Blueprint, what certain types of events do, and how to manage public variables. We also learned how to properly manage time, and we also learned more about how wolves today are being mercilessly hunted and are struggling because of human carelessness.

What's next for Lone Wolf

Next steps for lone wolf are: More Quests Larger and More Maps More Types Of Animals Deeper Plot More Abilities For Wolf
