Inspiration
Supporting small businesses contributes to the growth of local economies while uplifting the community. However, a 2024 survey conducted by LendingTree found that 42% of people couldn't shop locally due to a lack of convenience. LocalCompass provides a convenient way to discover new small businesses - helping you help the community.
What it does
LocalCompass is a website for searching and locating locally owned businesses in the West Point Grey area.
How we built it
We started by making a template on Figma and then translated that idea to a website by using VSCode, React, and Google API.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest learning curve we encountered was learning how to utilize API's for our mapping feature. The majority of the group has very limited experience using API which resulted in a lot of debugging and learning moments. With a lot of optimism and a lot of caffeine, we managed to come together to make it work.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our biggest accomplishment is creating a functioning map.
What we learned
Over the past 12 hours, everyone on our team has had the opportunity to try something new; whether that be working with API's, learning website development skills, or utilizing database integration for the first time. We have all become more comfortable with our ability to compete in a Hackathon.
What's next for LocalCompass
LocalCompass hopes to expand its database to encompass all Vancouver communities.
