Inspiration
We at Lexily have always shared a passion for reading. Reading is a fundamental skill that plays a crucial role in personal and professional growth, yet schools tend to discourage the reading development process through stress-inducing and inefficient methods. We hope to change that.
What it does
Lexily is a revolutionary reading app that leverages the power of AI to make reading more accessible and engaging for users. It generates passages tailored to each individual's reading level, ensuring that they can read comfortably while gradually improving their skills. GPT-3 grants the app an infinite number of articles, short stories, and educational content, covering endless topics and genres to cater to diverse interests.
Using a sophisticated question-generation algorithm, Lexily quizzes users on the content they've read, reinforcing comprehension and critical thinking. This interactive approach encourages users to actively engage with the material, thereby enhancing their reading abilities in an enjoyable manner.
How we built it
Lexily uses the OpenAI API to generate passages and questions. The backend utilizes Flask while the front end utilizes React and tailwind.
The app's intuitive user interface was designed to provide a seamless reading experience, making navigation and interaction effortless for users of all ages. We've also implemented a robust backend system to handle user data securely and efficiently.
Challenges we ran into
Developing Lexily was not without its challenges. One of the primary obstacles we faced was fine-tuning the prompt to generate passages that precisely matched users' reading levels. Striking the right balance between readability and challenging content required extensive iterations and data refinement.
Another significant challenge was designing the question-generation algorithm to ensure that the quizzes were meaningful and effectively assessed comprehension. We wanted to avoid generic questions to make the learning process genuinely valuable.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Despite the challenges, we're immensely proud of what Lexily has become. Our AI-powered reading app has a very quick generation time, generates unique content, and provides useful tips. We genuinely believe it holds immense potential for the future of education.
What we learned
Creating Lexily taught us valuable lessons about the potential of AI to enhance education and personal development. We learned that combining cutting-edge technology with a human-centered approach can yield remarkable results.
Additionally, we gained insights into the complexities of NLP and the importance of continuously refining AI prompts for optimal performance. The model offered inconsistent results until given an example to work off of, which was not something we were expecting.
What's next for Lexily
The journey doesn't end here for Lexily. We're committed to expanding the app's content library with more diverse and engaging material. Additionally, we plan to incorporate features such as personalized reading recommendations, social sharing, and reading challenges to further motivate users.
Furthermore, we aim to collaborate with educators and researchers to explore ways to integrate Lexily into formal educational settings and assess its long-term impact on reading proficiency. Our ultimate goal is to motivate both inexperienced and experienced readers while still providing educational content.
