Inspiration
The overall cost on energy is high particularly in areas which have an influx on individuals within the lower middle class income. This will lead to problems for both the energy distributor and consumer because the consumer will try to find alternative means towards energy utilisation which sometimes may lead to illegal activities and the distributor will lose on revenue require to maintain its entire business.
What it does
The Technology collects energy data from connected plugsets and chipsets embedded within a household or apartment of the user then the data is parsed through a Wi-Fi node which connects all the devices together to build a WiFi mesh network thus making it easier for data to be pushed into one's application without the need to purchase Wi-Fi communication devices (which are a bit costly). The data is now logged into the application and processed in real time provide information on all endpoints and the energy being utilized. The notification system now helps end users to find all the problem areas such as inactive connections, standby devices, geyser being on for too long, lighting control and pool pump management. These inefficiencies results in over 25 - 30 % of overall expenditure leading to an average gross loss of R 3800 per households per annum on their energy expenditure.
How I built it
Pretty simple, using a design of low cost WiFi based plugsets and chipsets which costs between R80 to R150 depending on specifications and load size requirements. Using open source tools and wireframes that are available through open licensing with little to no restrictions on modification, duplication, reproduction even commercialization. JavaScript has been used for the platform.
Challenges I ran into
Finding key operating subsystems for the software suite such as a billing system for users to pay their utilities through a subscription model on a monthly payment process.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Finding some of the tools I will need for development. Still looking for others.
What I learned
Using Node.js (which i have not used before for development) it was challenging but overall it was worth it learning the basics of javascript.
What's next for Learn Base Utility
Continue with the development of an industrial solution with it's partners in order to achieve mandated goals.
