Inspiration

We were inspired by a mix of nostalgic virtual pet games and modern digital ownership. Games like Tamagotchi and Talking Tom showed how users could form emotional bonds with digital companions. At the same time, blockchain and AI are reshaping how we think about ownership, interaction, and value. We wanted to merge these ideas into a mobile-first experience that feels playful and rewarding, while pushing the boundary between Web2 gaming and Web3 tech.

What it does

HashPal is a retro-style mobile game where users care for a pixelated pet that "mines" crypto while they rest. In exchange for passively sharing anonymized data, users earn small amounts of Bitcoin over time. Players have a limited amount of daily "energy" they can use to chat with their pet and receive AI-generated, personality-driven responses. It's like Tamagotchi meets ChatGPT, wrapped in an 8-bit world with real crypto rewards.

How we built it

We’re building HashPal using:

  • VibeCode App – for visual-first mobile development.
  • Cursor AI – to power our pet's AI-generated dialogue.
  • Custom AI prompts – to tailor conversations to user behavior and game state.

Our goal was to keep the experience intuitive and emotionally engaging while laying the foundation for blockchain integration.

Challenges we ran into

  • Creating dynamic assets: Designing and linking custom NFTs or items that players can purchase, attach to pets, and potentially trade later posed both technical and UX challenges.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Building a semi functioning MVP with AI-driven pet interactions using VibeCode and Cursor AI.
  • Establishing a clean, retro visual identity that’s engaging and approachable.
  • Designing a gamified system where passive activity (like rest) rewards players.
  • Laying the foundation for future NFT interoperability and itemization.

What we learned

  • Simple mechanics like energy and AI chat can create deep emotional engagement.
  • Abstracting blockchain complexity is critical to make Web3-friendly games accessible to non-crypto users.

What's next for HashPal

  • Integrate cross-chain NFT support so players can use their own NFTs as avatars.
  • Add wallet connectivity and in-game purchasing of dynamic NFT-based items.
  • Expand our AI system to support emotional memory, mood, and reactive storytelling.
  • Launch a cosmetic and utility NFT marketplace for pet skins and accessories.
  • Enable live Bitcoin micro-rewards through Lightning or faucet integration.
