Inspiration
We noticed SOSE lacked an accessible online presence, making it difficult for members and prospective students to learn about the club. We wanted to fix that by creating a central hub for everything SOSE.
What it does
The SOSE website provides information about the club, leadership, events, tutoring, and merchandise—all in one place. It connects students to resources and helps promote the SOSE community at CSUN.
How we built it
We used HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the frontend, hosted it on Ubuntu 24.04 with Apache2, and connected it to the internet using Cloudflare Tunnel. ZeroTier enabled remote access, and GitHub handled version control.
Challenges we ran into
We faced challenges with server configuration, tunneling setup, and syncing contributions between multiple developers. Ensuring reliable uptime on a locally hosted server also required troubleshooting.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully built and deployed a functional public website for SOSE, purchased a custom domain, and created a fully self-hosted environment—all within the hackathon timeframe.
What we learned
We learned how to configure web servers, use Cloudflare Tunnel and ZeroTier for networking, collaborate effectively through GitHub, and manage a full deployment process from scratch.
What's next for SOSE Website - Hackathon-sose-225
We plan to add authentication for members, integrate event calendars, improve mobile design, and eventually migrate the hosting to a dedicated SOSE-owned server for long-term use.
