Inspiration

From Patrick lead dev- Going into high school I was severely overweight. I wanted to lose weight but I struggled to find the right app that could help me keep track of recipes I liked and track what I was eating. This years theme being Nine and Dine gave me the perfect opportunity to build the app I wish I had when I started my journey.

What it does

It is an easy to use web app with three pages. One page you can search for recipes, review their nutrition info and how to prepare them and add them to your cookbook. The second page is the cookbook, a collection of all the recipes the user has saved all in one place. The last page is the meal log, a day by day breakdown of how many calories and macro's you consumed put together to make it easy to track your progress.

How we built it

We used Java with maven to manage our dependencies including spring boot, thymeleaf, and h2 for the backend and basic html and css for the frontend. In order to search for recipes and get nutrition info we used the spoonacular API.

Challenges we ran into

It was our first time using spring boot and thymeleaf so it was a slow start trying to understand how those worked and apply them.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am proud that we have a complete demo of the website with the most important features complete.

What we learned

We learned how to combine the different programming skills we know into our own custom tech stack to build applications on the web.

What's next for Hack Nutrition

We hope to polish the UI to make it more unique add new features like auto logging food in the meal log and polish the recipe search to make it easier to apply filters and find more unique recipes.
