Singapore is a tropical city. We deal with intense monsoon rains that can dump over 100mm in an hour. You would think a smart nation like ours would have this handled, but the December 2023 Orchard Road flooding proved otherwise. Luxury shops turned into swimming pools and basement carparks filled with water in minutes.

The problem is not a lack of data. The NEA has sensors everywhere tracking every millimeter of rain. But when you check your phone during a storm, you see "45mm/hour" or a yellow warning symbol. What does that actually mean? Should you drive home or take the MRT? Is the underpass at Bukit Timah passable? Nobody tells you.

There is a gap between the raw numbers and real decisions. PUB and NEA have excellent monitoring systems, but the last step, turning that data into specific guidance for drivers, cyclists, or pedestrians, simply does not exist. That is why we built FloodSimSG. We wanted to bridge that gap between tropical rainfall statistics and actual survival decisions, giving Singaporeans the context they need to navigate our wet climate safely.
