Inspiration
We were incensed by the lack of preventive measures related to ocean pollution, and since the majority of plastic waste originates from our houses (such as plastic bottles), we decided to create a desktop app which encourages users to replace their household items with ocean-friendly alternatives!
What it does
FishFriendly is a desktop app, and it provides a series of cards with an unlocking mechanism, allowing users to find alternatives to everyday ocean-polluting products, and replace them with more environmentally conscious ones. There is also in-built data visualization to give perspective to the user about the impact of ocean pollution
How we built it
Our app is built on ElectronJS, and we used a module called electron-store to locally store data about our user's actions and the card unlocking system. The UI framework we used is TailwindCSS, which was really fun to use as well.
Challenges we ran into
Javascript.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Javascript.
Okay but really, we're proud of the fact that we built a full-functioning desktop app within such a short time, especially since both of us are just poor high school students students who are getting into coding.
What we learned
JAVASCR- We learnt about how to design the UI with a sidebar navigation, since it sort of messes with the page layout a lot. Previously, we almost exclusively built apps with navigation on the top.
What's next for FishFriendly
It has a lot of future potential, especially if we convert it into a mobile app, so we don't plan on stopping here.
