Inspiration
It's Dez's first hackathon, and he really likes Doom. We were also inspired by Aaron's face.
What it does
Custom mod for DOOM (1993), otherwise known as a WAD (standing for 'Where's All the Data?'). Aaron gave us his blessing to do this to his visage, promise.
How we built it
DOOM. Prboom2. SLADE3. Clip Studio Paint. Caffeine. To make the 'final boss' a bit more interesting, we used some custom functionality based on an open source enemy AI tweak by a guy called zrrion.
Challenges we ran into
Neither of us are running Windows so getting set up with the tools in the beginning stages was a bit of a pain. In fact, most of the coding probably went into trying to wrangle installations, file types and compatibility issues. Oh yeah, and it took us ages to figure out how to program a door for some reason.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Considering neither of us have ever modded DOOM before, we view anything a success. Dez did an awesome job getting stuck in at his first hack, especially for someone who's never considered themselves techy before.
What we learned
Dez has way too much fun turning enemy sprites into Aaron. You'd think adding custom sprites would be the easiest part of DOOM wadding. It's actually the hardest.
