Inspiration

How many menstruation phases can you name? We couldn’t name any, maybe two at most. This is what prompted us to explore the problem space of menstrual education. We started off our project with a survey to better understand how confident most people felt in their knowledge of menstruation. According to our user research, we discovered 30% of people could not name ANY phases! This is alarming, especially considering most of our surveyors were adults! Moreover, over half stated they learned about periods in grade six but didn’t really find the information useful. These findings, along with our secondary research, highlight potential gaps in menstrual education, prompting us to address our problem statement: “How might we help young teens learn about menstruation and break the stigma around it in an engaging manner?”

What it does

Cycle Quest is a journey through the menstrual cycle in the form of games targeted towards young teens (thus the cool and funny names and characters!! 😎✌). Users can gain knowledge in a very simple manner while having fun. The goal of Cycle Quest is to debunk popular myths and provide useful, real-world information rather than basic textbook knowledge. Watch our demo for a game run-through!

How we built it

We implemented the design thinking process to create this project! After researching our problem and defining our solution, we went into creating user flows and wireframes, and then we made them into a reality with a high-fidelity prototype in Figma and Canva. After that, the development of our game was done in Pygame with VScode. 💻

Challenges we ran into

It was difficult to work on game code and design as a group at once, so we decided to try pair programming to split up tasks and effectively collaborate. In terms of code, it was challenging to use Object Oriented Programming to organize the structure of our game and properly link all the game components. 🙃

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of our user-friendly design and cute components. We are very excited to have our envisioned ideas turned into reality and create a functioning game! 🤩

What we learned

We learned how to use new technologies like Pygame and Figma. We tried out pair programming for the first time and found it to be a great strategy for teamwork! 🥰

What's next for Cycle Quest

For our future game development, we would like to complete the fourth phase of the game to expand on this topic. We also aim to incorporate various languages to make the game playable by teens all over the world, especially in rural communities, and make it further accessible. Just as an extra feature to promote continuous use of the game, we would encourage players to strive for leaderboard positions to win prizes! 🥳
