Inspiration
As someone who is very new to cooking and wanting to get more experienced into the whole process, I thought about I would use that would help me as an amateur cook. After a month of coding, I made an app that I think Eitan's audience and a lot of people who wants to get into cooking would use. The name of the app is called "Cook Eit", which uses play on words with Eitan's name.
What it does
The app tackles two main pain points that new cooks face: figuring out what to cook and making a grocery list for those recipes. Cook Eit tackles the first pain point by letting users search through a growing crowd-sourced database of almost 600 recipes. They can use the built-in filters and find recipes from different categories and areas. Each recipe will include the ingredients needed to make it and the steps to Cook Eit. The second pain point gets solved with one button. Once you find a recipe you want to make, there will be a button to add those ingredients in a grocery list. You can view that grocery list immediately and start shopping! Cook Eit solves a lot of time for cooks when it comes to finding a meal to cook and making a grocery list for those recipes. There are other features that builds around these two features such as adding your own recipes, recipe favorites, add/edit grocery items, and many more.
How we built it
The app is built using Xcode and SwiftUI with the database of recipe coming from TheMealDB.
Challenges we ran into
The main challenge I ran into is starting the project late. I knew about about the hackathon halfway through the event and so I had to prioritize on working on the main features of the app while not making it feel incomplete or rushed.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm glad that I get to submit the app in time before the deadline. Definitely proud of myself for the time I sacrificed to prioritize making this app.
What we learned
I learned a lot about other cooking and grocery list apps when doing my research and found what makes them special and stand out.
What's next for Cook Eit
There's still a lot of features that I want to add to Cook Eit. I want to focus on testing it to more users and getting feedback. If it solves their pain points, then it's on the right direction. I'm hoping it wins the Shipyard Creator Contest, but if it doesn't I'll work on publishing the app.
