Inspiration
Since this year's theme is designing for college students, we thought about the idea of time management as it is something we all need help with (and yes, we noticed this even more when working on this project). The core feature of this app (a timer) was inspired by the idea of a tomato clock, which by default works for 25 minutes and takes a 5 minutes break. It is a working method that has been proven to help people maximize what they can benefit from their working period.
What it does
Clokeys is an app that helps you manage your time as you study, work, or just whenever you need an assistant to help you keep in mind of work-life balance. Using this app, you can setup a timer that pairs up work time and break time so that you can get your work done without exhausting yourself. It allows you to input your fields of study and manage your tasks. Through doing so, the app can also recommend online courses related to your study just in case if you want to go beyond your school work.
How we built it
During the first 2 hours the team worked together on ideas that we can try to implement on the theme of time management. Then, while currently staying in a different time zone, Yiding created a wireframe and XD prototype. After Fei and Sirui got up, Sirui started working on the html and css of the app and Fei gathered the materials and prepared for the presentation. At the end of the second day the team had an online meeting to discuss the progress, Yiding finished the javasript features and the team finished the rest of the coding part together.
Challenges we ran into
At first we tried to implement too many ideas that we did not have time to finish and refine in the time span of he event. At the same time one member had faced some technical difficulties with co-coding the app which led to a re-division of work. At the end we tried to focus on the core feature of the app and gave up on coding out some of the other features.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This was the first hackathon event for all three members on the team. It is also the first time we tried to build a product in a short time like this. Even though it was a lot of hard work, we enjoyed working on it and are proud of that we managed to complete it.
What we learned
To build this app, we had to do a lot of immediate problem solving as a team. We learned a lot about looking for another route when one doesn't work, and also how to help each other out as team members.
What's next for Clokeys
Again, there are a lot of features that are not quite finished right now, so first and foremost is finishing and refining the features we originally planned. At the same time, there is one feature we thought would be cool but did not have the technical ability to implement, which is that we planned for a data analysis feature that would tell the user about their time usage and accomplishments during a period of time. It would make the app more useful if we get to implement this feature.
