Inspiration

The United States OFAC (Office of Foreign Asset Controls) has removed Syria from their list of embargoed countries. Tech companies are now free to offer their services in Syria. However, many have still been reluctant to make the change. So we thought of a way to make it easy for anyone to advocate to these companies.

What it does

When you enter a website that is blocked in Syria, you get a popup. This offers three buttons:

  • Generate a custom Instagram post for awareness
  • Generate a LinkedIn message (we also provide good linkedin contacts to send to)
  • Generate a Gmail draft (with pre-selected email contacts)

How we built it

  • Used CRXJS (javascript chrome extension framework) to build frontend
  • Generated instagram post using JIMP
  • Got the blocked data from unblocksyria.com
  • Generated message leads using Hunter.io

What's next for Click For Syria

We got in contact with the developers at unblocksyria.com. They said if the project is a success they would seriously consider distributing it from their website and giving us full API access.

Click For Syria can also be utilized for other countries (like Sudan or Venezuela) as US and EU remove sanctions from them. At its core, it is a simple reminder to help the Ummah, and can be refitted to different purposes.
