Inspiration
The Carbon Markets have been turbulent following reports that some carbon credits are not legit or misrepresent carbon project impact. At the core of this issue is the fact that it is difficult for the average person to audit carbon credits and verify their veracity. We wanted to build a tool that can improve the credibility of the voluntary carbon market through making it easy to audit carbon credits and the MRV data that underlies them.
What it does
The tool we have built visualizes carbon verification data stored on CO2.storage. This carbon data comprises the digital monitoring, reporting, and verification (DMRV) data that was collected to calculate the carbon credits. The final data that results from the analysis of DMRV data and represents the carbon stocks in a region is what is stored on CO2.storage, and visualized by this tool. This makes it simple for anyone to interrogate the data underlying the carbon credits they have bought.
How we built it
We built it using satellite data from NASA, a geospatial analytics engine, web mapping technology and of course the CO2.storage platform.
Challenges we ran into
A few technical challenges and also a lack of adequate time to polish the project before releasing it.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Launching a tool that can be used by anyone to verify carbon stocks anywhere in the world, and can showcase a new model for transparency in the VCM.
What we learned
We learned how to work with the various templates and schemas available on CO2.storage.
What's next for Carbon Data Visualizer
We intend to continue building and improving the tool and particularly to extend it to cover other areas as its currently bound to a certain area.
