Inspiration

This project was inspired by two games in particular. Celeste and Super Mario Wonder. They are both expressive platforms with undeniable style. I wanted to take some of the bouldering mechanics from Celeste but dial back the difficulty. My other goal for the jam was to try to find some kind of identity for the project using Super Mario Wonder as a reference with its lively world and gameplay.

What it does

A simple platformer game.

How we built it

This was build in Godot. Most of the visuals were created in engine using shaders but some were developed using Photoshop.

Challenges we ran into

Time! Always so much to polish and try to make the game better. I am also not an artist so making any assets was particularly difficult for me.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm glad I was able to very quickly make a design document that helped me stay on track while I was very tired. Planning a full image for a game with a reasonable scope is always difficult but I feel like I have been getting better!

What we learned

Using screenspace UVs is a great way to have repeating textures. It is especially nice with scrolling textures and they appear to be one continuous stream.

What's next for Blockport

Variety in movement and levels! Some cuts had to be made with how the camera and levels could be designed around. Without a restriction with time more diverse environments for players to interact with is a must.
