Inspiration
Classic Legend of Zelda 1 is my inspiration and wanting to bring that type of game play to life in MR with only hand controls
What it does
It's a mini adventure like classic zelda where you wander around, talk to NPCs, figure out what is going on in this Tiny world and solve puzzles to progress. This time the setting is MR 3D using just your hands to control the hero.
How I built it
It was built in Unity by myself during the course of this hackathon. I built a retro style football game before for MR and release for Vision Pro and now wanted to do an action adventure as well.
Challenges we ran into
Moving the world and fading in and out objects in MR isn't trivial. Also I wanted the paging/scrolling to look like part of the design aesthetic. So everything became 3D tiles, which ironically was very much a classic rendering style of my inspiration, but of course in 3D vs 2D.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I managed to get all kinds of gestures and actions packed into just one set of hand controls. Index Pinch for drag moving, Middle for Melee, Grab Blocks that I used for the puzzles, Open Palm and Thumbs Up custom gestures recognition for the Magic Shot and Bomb moves.
Also I am proud of the scrolling mechanic. I think this is a unique adaptation for MR 3D space verses the 2D view on traditional gaming systems.
What we learned
Lots as I've not built a game like this for MR before nor have I seen anything like this. Basically there was a lot of trial and error. With that said, I think dynamically paging the world as I do in my game enables 3rd person exploration in MR that hasn't been done before and I'm excited to push that forward.
What's next for Tiny Trek
More levels, dungeons, more npcs, and maybe some puzzle oriented boss fights would serve well too. Basically I need to take this from demo to game, but I think I have a good basis now with this version.
