Inspiration
We were inspired by the experiences of disabled people in our lives, and how they can struggle daily with finding accessibility information for restaurants and other establishments.
What it does
Our project allows users to create and view reviews of establishments based on their accessibility for people with different disabilities. Users can filter places based on accommodations for their disability (wheelchair ramps, accessible seating, elevators, etc)
How we built it
We used Google Cloud and the Google Maps API for users to find different nearby establishments, DataStax Astra for our database, Domain.com for our amazing domain. Our webpage was done with React, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript on the front-end, and a Python backend.
Challenges we ran into
Finding reliable data for the accessibility of establishments, since there isn't too much publicly available data and much of the data would be from user reviews, which we wouldn't have data from without opening the site to the public. We also attempted to make the site itself have more accessibility features, but there was not enough time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Successfully creating a search and filtering system for disabilities, creating a simple and good looking UI, and successfully implementing several API's.
What we learned
This is a complex issue which we tackled very well in this hackathon, though for a more complete solution it would require much more time.
What's next for Axly
Incentivizing reviews via a badge system, expanding our search and filtering system with more disabilities, finding more reliable data sources, and adding more accessibility features.
