Inspiration
It has been under a week since the election results have come out, and regardless of the candidate selected, we have seen how divided we are as a nation. When our team came across this situation, we asked ourselves a few simple questions: How do we unite America? How do we make people realize that its about being an American first, rather than perhaps a Conservative or a Liberal? How do we take people's passion for politics and political change, and drive the momentum into a positive impact? How do we connect people, straight to the White House? The result - Apptivist.
What it does
Apptivist is a social-political iOS app, that gets people of opposite parties together to promote political engagement and awareness among millennials. The app uses an API, provided by the WeThePeople, to sign and show support towards petitions that reach the White House. After signing up, a user is asked to provided anonymous information regarding their political preferences and interests. Apptivist then uses this information to curate a daily feed of the 10 best petitions on WeThePeople.gov which we believe the user would be interested in supporting.
In order to promote understanding and unity, Apptivist will match you with a person of differing ideological thinking that has also shown interest in one of the petitions that you support.
By connecting people of differing ideologies by showing their common interests, Apptivist aims to promote unity in the aftermath of a most contentious election.
How we built it
Apptivist was built using a parse server hosted on heroku for the backend, and Swift for the frontend iOS application. Petitions("Apptivs") are gathered using the 'We The People', White House API.
What's next for Apptivist
We have ambitious plans for the app. What started as a small hackathon project, can end up becoming a global change catalyst, inspiring millions to affect the way their authorities work, and ultimately unifying the world as one. We intend to add more navigation, personal profiles, minor UI Tweaks, etc.
