Inspiration ⭐

Our main inspiration was gleaned from looking through the Staff/Administration section of our school’s yearbook and realizing that the majority of our staff (especially the upper-level administration) did not consist of individuals from marginalized groups. We noticed that this problem was present in institutions throughout the country due to systemic discrimination, which causes subconscious bias, so we wanted to find a way for individuals, communities, and businesses to address them. Additionally, we previously attended a webinar about corporate-level diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) about a year ago. Although the webinar was extremely informative, we still found ourselves a bit confused on how a company would actually implement DEI. Therefore, we decided to use programming to streamline the process of creating a more inclusive workplace.

What it does 💪

Our website focuses on first, informing people about the types of conscious and unconscious biases and how they can affect major decisions and systems. We provide concrete ways for people to inwardly reflect on their own biases and stop their proliferation. Even further, we give solutions for communities and businesses to create diversity, equity, and inclusion on a larger scale––because despite all the good individual change can bring, these biases are deeply rooted in our society, so systemic change is one of the most effective ways to counter them. Thus, our website is key to educating those unaware of subconscious biases and creating a more self-aware society that includes the voices of even the most vulnerable.

How we built it 💻

We used HTML, CSS, and Javascript to create a dynamic and aesthetically pleasing website. As beginners in web development, we wanted to challenge ourselves, so we tried to emulate the CSS styling we see in other websites. At the same time, we wanted to ensure that the website was as informative as possible, so a lot of our time was also spent writing articles for the website.

Challenges we ran into ❌

Our endeavor wasn’t simple given the time limit of 24 hours. We tasked ourselves with delivering a message of inclusion through our work, so making sure we could convey a large range of research and diverse opinions, all while keeping the information easily readable, was a challenge. Most importantly, learning to incorporate adapt to different programming languages that we either had very little to experience with proved endearing. One of the most difficult aspects of this project was incorporating the CSS within the HTML, as we had to encode the CSS in separate files and call the formatting to specific attributes/classes of our website.

Accomplishments that we're proud of 🏆

The entire experience was incredibly rewarding. As beginner developers, we are quite proud of our entire website, especially since we weren’t too familiar with these languages. It was extremely rewarding to see each page progress as we merged the separate elements/divisions of our website and organized vast amounts of knowledge. Additionally, realizing how complicated and nuanced it is to program a website was enlightening, and we now know that combining such skills with the topics we are passionate about can really make a difference.

What we learned 📖

From a design perspective, we learned a lot about CSS styling and how to create transitions when the user hovers over or clicks certain parts of our site. From a DEI perspective, we learned about the active part that subconscious biases in our lives and our communities. From the people that are closest to us, the doctors that we choose to treat us, the neighborhoods we choose, and the people we date, unconscious categorizing forms the basis of our relationship with others, and the world at large. What made this experience even more rewarding was the fact that this research is something that could visibly enact change, in ourselves and others

What's next for All-Inclusive 📈

All-Inclusive is a highly scalable business because of the extremely large market we can educate, since every person holds subconscious biases that they mitigate. In the future, we would like to add more articles, as to expose people to more of these implicit biases that they can self-reflect on, and we would like to make the website more interactive, for example by adding an anonymous forum for users to communicate on.
