RealAIs

Inspiration

Worried about the future of authenticity, we wanted to take the first steps to help the general populace understand the differences between human generated content and AI generated content. We hoped that it would teach those currently unaware and train the future generation to distinguish between authentic content and that generated.

What it does

RealAIs challenges users to use common techniques to guess if an image has been AI generated. Each technique has an engaging description discussing a strategy to discern AI Images from real photos. As you play, the game tracks how many images you have guessed correct or incorrect, challenging you to improve and compete with friends.

How we built it

Our front end was in ReactJS, with JavaScript and JSON assisting the various real and AI photos to be displayed properly and efficiently. We were inspired by a geoguessr-like format of exploration and implemented pan and zoom on the photos which are contained inside of a wrapper.

Challenges we ran into

Following proper coding guidelines when using React was initially difficult to maintain. As we progressed however, we followed the React Guidelines and overall coding principles to finish out strong. Another challenge was trying to construct the data set, as we had to find/create all the AI and real images, making sure we have the licensing to use them. We also had to use python to crop and scale every image to a standard size, so resolution wouldn't be a giveaway.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud we accomplished creating an end product that achieves our goal of being one of the first steps to educate everyone on the uses, misuses, and detection of AI in media. While many projects utilize generative AI, we are proud of raising awareness for being able to manually detect generative AI.

What we learned

We learned so much about technology stacks, but perhaps even more than that, we learned about techniques to identify what is authentically created by humans and how. Although AI is constantly improving, many uses can be detected if you have a keen eye and know what to look for.

What's next for RealAIs

We hope to continue integrating other formats of media such as audio and video. If we do this, we would help to continue raising awareness for the general public to detect AI without any special technologies. It could also be used for training in the workplace to help people detect if something isn't what it seems.
